Sildenafil
Sildenafil is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Sildenafil is available in oral tablets in strengths of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
Drug Uses
Sildenafil is available by prescription only. Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Sildenafil is also prescribed to treat other conditions as determined by a doctor. Sildenafil is to be used by men only.
Sildenafil works by assisting the flow of blood to the penile area, thereby enabling a man, when sexually stimulated, to achieve an erection and to maintain it long enough for sexual intercourse.
Dosage
Sildenafil should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. The usual dose of Sildenafil is 50mg taken about an hour prior to sexual arousal. The effects of Sildenafil can last for up to four hours.
Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your doctor.
The tablet should be swallowed whole – do not break, crush, or chew the tablet.
Missed Dose
When Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, the dose is taken when required, so a missed dose is not applicable.
Precautions
Before using Sildenafil ensure that your doctor has a full knowledge of your medical history. This includes any other medications you are using as well vitamin supplements, herbal medications and over-the-counter remedies. Sildenafil has been known to react badly with certain medications.
Sildenafil should be used with caution by men with any of the following medical conditions: blood disorders, a history of eye disorders, liver or kidney problems, high or low blood pressure, ulcers, a bleeding disorder, heart problems, or blood vessel problems.
Men who have suffered a recent heart attack, stroke or irregular heartbeat should use Sildenafil with extreme caution.
Inform your doctor if you are using any other erectile dysfunction treatments such as implants, vacuum pumps or penis injections.
Sildenafil does not protect against pregnancy, neither does it prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV AIDS.
Side-effects
Call for emergency medical assistance if any of the following allergic symptoms occur: difficulty in breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat.
Contact a doctor immediately if any of the following serious side-effects occur: chest pain, fast or irregular heart beat, fainting, loss of memory, ringing in the ears, convulsions, persistent dizziness, persistent vision problems, a loss of vision in one or both eyes, or a sudden hearing loss.
Less serious side-effects include dizziness, diarrhea, flushing, heartburn, headache, temporary vision problems, sensitivity to light, stuffy nose, or upset stomach. If any side-effects persist or get worse contact your doctor. Your dosage may need adjusting.
In the event of an erection lasting longer than four hours, contact a doctor immediately, as this can cause damage to the penis and even permanent impotence.
This is not a complete list of side effects. If any other uncomfortable symptoms occur and persist, contact your doctor.
Overdose
If overdose with Sildenafil is suspected, get emergency assistance immediately. Symptoms of overdose include fainting, chest pain, severe dizziness, or prolonged erection.
Storage
Sildenafil should be kept in a cool, dry place away from sun and moisture.
